If your area has been hit by a hail storm, you may be wondering about your roof.  Our roofs and siding take a beating during hail storms.  If the hail hitting your house is large, you could be looking at considerable roof damage.  So, if you are wondering should I replace my roof after a hail storm?  The answer is probably, yes.

Survey the Damage & Submit Your Claim

If your neighbors are having roof or siding repair work done after a hail storm, you need to have your roof looked at.  Hire a reputable contractor.  Check out any contractor before you hire them.  Ask your friends and family for a recommendation.  Do some internet research on the company.  Also, check them out with the Better Business Bureau.

After you’ve found a couple of roofing contracts that you want to work with, get quotes.  It is always good to get at least two repair estimates.  Compare them against each other.  Any quote that you receive should come complete with a full description of the work that needs to be performed.  Pictures of the damaged areas are preferred.

Next, make a claim.  Submit your repair estimate to your insurance company.  They will send someone out to assess the damage.  That person needs to have your repair estimate.

Provided all goes well, your claim with be approved.  You will receive a check for the repair or replacement, less your deductible.

Should You Have the Work Done?

If your roof needs work, get the work done.  You may be tempted to take the cash and spend it elsewhere.   Who doesn’t need an extra $10,000?  Skipping the repairs can mean a huge headache in the future.

Failing to make the repairs can jeopardize your coverage.  For the most part, you have a time limit on when the repairs need to be completed.  After that, you need to show cause as to why you haven’t made the necessary repairs.

Not to mention, your roof is damaged!  Once your roof is damaged, it can continue to rot at an increased rate.  The problem with roof damage is water.  If your roof is already wrecked from a hail storm, water will get in further ruining your home and property.

Also, if you have a future storm and more damage, it won’t be covered if the roof wasn’t repaired.  There is no faking this.  If an adjuster sees old shingles when there should be new ones, they can deny your claim.
