Preparing for Windstorms

The town of Quincy, Illinois is all too familiar with the dangers of windstorms.  Quincy recently remembered the one year anniversary of a windstorm that wreaked havoc on the town.  Over a year later, some people are still rebuilding.
People likely don’t even consider windstorms when they think of natural disasters.  Windstorms should make the list.  Severe windstorms are dangerous.  They are also difficult to predict.  Strong gust can come with little or no warning.  Preparing for windstorms may help lessen their blow.

Monitor the Weather for Severe Storms

Monitor the weather.  Watch your television, listen to the radio, and heed the warnings that come across your cell phone.  Some of us may even have battery powered radios tuned to NOAA Weather Radio. NOAA Weather Radio continually broadcasts weather information about your area.

If there are thunderstorm warnings or if the sky looks ominous, check the weather. Responding quickly to warnings is the most important step in staying safe.

Bring Loose Items Indoors

If high winds are predicted for your area, bring in your garden gnomes.  Gather your patio furniture and potted plants.  Bring in your yard art and grills.  These items can become projectiles during a windstorm.  They can injure others or damage homes.  You don’t want your potted herbs to end up in your neighbor’s kitchen.

Secure Large Outdoor Objects

Some things are too large to be brought inside.  For example, an outdoor soccer goal.  There was a report of a soccer goal having been lifted by high winds and dropped on the nearby goalie.  Anchoring large items can help avoid tragedies like this.
Large objects such as signs, tables, chairs, large umbrellas, play structures, watercrafts, and garbage cans, should be secured. Use weights, ropes or chains to secure these objects.

Secure Doors and Windows

Don’t forget the obvious as you are hustling to secure your property.  Close your windows and doors.  The open window in the upstairs powder room can cause a great deal of damage.  Open windows can result in water damage or broken glass. If you have shutters, close them. Also, close and secure doors since strong winds can easily rip them from hinges.

The dangers of high winds cannot be ignored.  We’ve all heard reports of downed trees landing in homes.  We’ve also heard of bounce houses taking off with children inside.  Planning for windstorms can help keep you safe.
